Free video compressor

Make your video smaller by as much as you like, or to the exact size you need. You get back an MP4 that plays anywhere.

  • Compressed on your device when possible
  • H.264 or H.265 MP4
  • Server fallback, deleted after 2 hours

How to compress a video

  1. 01

    Choose a video

Drop it on the page or pick it from your files, photo library or camera roll.

  2. 02

    Pick how much smaller

Take one of the four presets, from Light to Maximum, or type the exact size in MB you need.

  3. 03

    Download the MP4

Compare the result with the original, then save it. Not small enough? Compress it again.

Why compress here

The size you ask for

Type 25 MB and get a file just under 25 MB. On our servers the video is encoded in two passes; in your browser every result is checked and redone if it’s too big.

Compressed on your device

When your browser can handle the video, it’s compressed right there and never leaves your device.

67%

Plays anywhere

By default you get an H.264 MP4 with AAC audio, which phones, browsers, chat apps and editors all play. H.265 makes it smaller for newer devices.

Deleted after 2 hours

Videos that need our servers are deleted automatically 2 hours after compressing. Nobody else can see them.

No hidden metadata

The result carries no metadata, so no location and no details about your phone or camera.

What size to compress your video to

Apps and mail services turn away a video that’s even slightly over their limit. Here are the limits and the sizes we compress to, a little under each so the file always fits.

How compression affects quality

Every compressor, ours included, makes a video smaller by leaving out the detail you’re least likely to notice. Here’s what changes, and how to keep the part that matters to you.

  • What compression takes away

Compressing spends fewer bits on every frame. Fine detail such as grass, water and film grain softens first, and fast motion can turn blocky when the target is very small. The lighter the setting, from 30% smaller up to 90%, the closer the result looks to the original.

  • H.264 or H.265

H.264 plays on every phone, browser and editor, so it’s the default. H.265 needs about 35% fewer bits for the same picture, so at the same size it looks sharper, but some older devices can’t play it. Pick it under Format when the video is for newer phones and computers.

  • A lower resolution, not a broken picture

When the size you ask for is too small for the full resolution, we step down to a lower one, as far as 360p, instead of letting the picture fall apart. A sharp smaller picture looks better than a blocky big one. If even 360p doesn’t fit, we ask you for a larger size.

  • Compare before you download

The result plays right on the page, and you can switch between it and the original at the same moment to compare. Too soft? Recompress it with a lighter setting, without choosing the file again.

Supported video formats

You can compress MP4, M4V, MOV, QT, 3GP, 3G2, WEBM, MKV, AVI, WMV, ASF, FLV, MPG, MPEG, VOB, TS, MTS, M2TS, MXF, OGV. Whatever goes in, you get back an MP4 with H.264 or H.265 video and AAC audio.

  • Compressed in your browser

MP4, M4V, MOV, QT, 3GP, 3G2, WEBM, MKV, TS, MTS, M2TS files are compressed on your device when your browser can decode the video and sound inside. H.264 almost always works; H.265, AV1 and some audio such as AC-3 depend on your device. HDR videos always go to our servers, the only place their colors come out right.

  • Compressed on our servers

Browsers can’t read AVI, WMV, ASF, FLV, MPG, MPEG, VOB, MXF, OGV files, so they’re uploaded and compressed on our servers, like any video your device can’t handle. There a video can be up to 1 GB, 60 minutes and 4K, and it’s deleted 2 hours after compressing.

Questions

Can’t find your answer? Write to feedback@videocompressor.xyz.

Which video formats can I compress?

Almost any: MP4, M4V, MOV, QT, 3GP, 3G2, WEBM, MKV, AVI, WMV, ASF, FLV, MPG, MPEG, VOB, TS, MTS, M2TS, MXF, OGV. Whatever goes in, you get back an MP4.

How big can my video be?

In your browser there’s no fixed limit; it depends on your device. When a video needs our servers, it can be up to 1 GB, 60 minutes and 4K (3840×2160), and you can compress 5 videos a day there.

Can I compress a video without losing quality?

Some detail is always traded for size, so the lighter the compression, the closer it looks to the original: the Light preset, or Best under Advanced, stays very close to it, and H.265 keeps more detail at the same size. When a target is too small for the full resolution, we lower the resolution instead of letting the picture fall apart. Compare the result with the original before you download.

Why is the result smaller than the size I asked for?

We aim a little under your target so the file is certain to fit, since sites and apps reject anything even slightly over. A few percent under is normal.

What’s the smallest size I can compress to?

It depends on how long the video is. To reach a small size we lower the resolution, as far as 360p; below that there aren’t enough bits for a watchable picture, so we ask you for a larger size.

What size should a video be for email?

Under 18 MB for Gmail and Yahoo Mail, and under 14 MB for Outlook. Their limits are 25 MB and 20 MB, but an attachment grows by about a third once it’s in the email. If you don’t know which service the other person uses, go with 14 MB.

How do I compress a video on iPhone or Android?

Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your phone and pick the video from your photo library; there’s no app to install. If your phone can compress it, it happens right there. If it can’t, for example with the HDR videos recent iPhones record by default, the video goes to our servers instead.

Can I compress several videos at once?

Yes, up to 20 at a time. They’re all compressed with the same settings, each with its own progress and download. Videos that need our servers count toward the 5 a day and are compressed one after another.

Why does my video sometimes go to your servers?

Browsers can’t read every format, some devices lack the encoder or the free storage, and HDR videos keep their colors right only on our servers. Then the video is uploaded and compressed there instead. You can also switch between your device and our servers yourself.

How long do you keep my video?

Videos compressed in your browser are never uploaded. Videos compressed on our servers, and their results, are deleted automatically 2 hours after compressing.

Who can see my video?

Only you. There are no public links, and we remove location and other metadata from the result.

Is it really free?

Yes: no account, no watermark, no trial. On our servers you can compress 5 videos a day; in your browser there’s no daily limit.
